Speech Therapy and Health Insurance

Good News, speech therapy is covered by insurance!

One of the most popular questions that we are asked is: “Do you accept insurance?” or “Is speech therapy covered by insurance?” The answer in both cases is yes! The majority of insurance plans will cover the initial speech evaluation in addition to a set number of sessions or in some cases an unlimited number of speech therapy sessions.

In network versus out of network. What’s the difference?

Speech therapy providers can either be in-network with your insurance plan or out-of-network. What does this mean?

To be considered an in-network provider, the speech therapy clinic must be credentialed and approved by the insurance company to accept the insurance plan. If your provider is in-network, following the session you may owe nothing, you may be responsible for a co-pay for the session, or pay the contracted session rate until your deductible is met. As an in-network provider, the speech clinic will file all claims on the clients behalf.

Alternatively, a speech therapy clinic may be considered an out-of-network provider. As an out-of-network provider, the client pays the full private pay rate and the clinic can then provide the client with a superbill. This superbill can then be submitted to the client’s health insurance company for reimbursement. It is the responsibility of the patient to submit the claim to their insurance provider. Depending on the plan and coverage, the client may be reimbursed directly a particular percentage as indicated by their plan.

A courtesy benefit check is provided to all of our clients when scheduling an evaluation with Berry Speech Academy. Relevant insurance details are provided to each family so that they understand their specific financial commitment and what to expect after the insurance claims are filed.
